Gumtree baby seller case remanded

The case against a 20-year-old woman who tried to sell she tried to sell a baby online for R5 000 was remanded in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The woman was arrested on Wednesday after posting an advertisement on advertising website Gumtree, asking for R5 000 in exchange for the child.

Police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Ngobese said following a tip-off, the woman was arrested during an undercover operation when another officer pretended to be a buyer. They met at a KFC in central Pietermaritzburg, where she was subsequently arrested.

In a statement, Gumtree said the advertisement was immediately removed and the woman’s account was blocked. She is now barred from posting any further ads on the site.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the case was remanded to October 26 for a formal bail application and further investigation.
