Gynaecologist gets five years

He was granted leave to appeal against his conviction and the sentence.

Dr Danie van der Wat was sentenced to five years for culpable homicide, reports the Witbank News.

Dr Van der Walt listened tensely as magistrate Merlene Greyvenstein handed down the sentence on Thursday.

She said Dr Van der Walt failed to do everything a specialist of his calibre should have done to save the life of Pamela Daweti in August 2005.

She granted Dr Van der Walt leave to appeal against his conviction and the sentence.

Dr Van der Walt is out on R10 000 bail and he will remain free pending the appeal.

Buyiselwa Maditjane said the family can now start their healing process.
