Hazyview ambush leaves 2 dead and 1 injured as gunmen open fire on vehicle
A toddler escaped unharmed during a roadside ambush that saw attackers emerge from nearby bushes.
Two people were killed and one was injured in a shooting on Nyongane Main Road in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, at about 17:30 yesterday.
Lowvelder reports that, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, police responded to a complaint of a shooting involving a vehicle.
“Upon arrival, police found two men with gunshot wounds. They were certified dead at the scene by paramedics. A woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. A two-year-old child who was also in the vehicle was unharmed,” she says.
Ndubane added that preliminary investigations indicate that the four victims were travelling towards Nyongane when they were ambushed by an unknown number of suspects.
It is alleged that the suspects were hiding in nearby bushes and opened fire on the vehicle.
“The driver managed to continue driving for about 200m before rear-ending another vehicle and coming to a stop. The suspects, who were on foot, then allegedly approached the vehicle and shot the occupants at close range, killing the driver and his male passenger instantly. The injured woman is believed to be the driver’s wife,” she says.
Ndubane confirmed that a 72-hour activation plan has been implemented and that all relevant role players attended the scene.
Police are appealing to members of the public for any information that may assist in the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information is urged to contact Captain Eddie Rapagadi on 082 449 0231, Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or submit information via the MySAPS app.
