Hero pupil (8) saves friend from burning taxi in Pietermaritzburg
A child jumped back into a taxi that had caught on fire to save his six-year-old friend who was asleep inside the vehicle.
In a heartwarming tale of courage and camaraderie, a Grade Three pupil from Springhaven Primary School, Likhanyile Duma, has emerged as a local hero after he fearlessly jumped into a burning taxi to rescue Grade One learner Aphelele Zondi (6) who was peacefully asleep during the urgent evacuation call.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Ramatha Road in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, while the children were en route home.
The taxi was carrying four pupils from Springhaven Primary School and learners from other schools.
Likhanyile, from Ashdown, who was sitting in the front of the taxi, says at first he was not aware of what was happening, but he and the other children were told to jump out of the taxi when smoke started to emerge from the front of the vehicle.
