High seas spectacle at Alkantstrand

Huge waves that crashed over the piers at Alkantstrand provided some spectacular viewing.

While the weekend’s heavy and persistent rain dampened some holiday plans, it also provided some spectacular viewing, especially at Alkantstrand in Richards Bay, where huge waves crashed over the piers.

A 10m wall of water and spray hits the end of the northern breakwater on yesterday morning. Four hours after the spring high tide, massive waves were still pounding the coast.

 

Definitely not a day for dolphin spotting from the platform.

 

An incoming vessel is barely visible through the mist as she enters port on Saturday afternoon.

 

Only brave professional surfers like Liam de Villiers would dare to ride this wild surf.
