High-speed train plan linking Durban to major cities back on track

A rail plan aims to link Durban with Johannesburg, Pretoria, Polokwane, Musina and Mbombela to boost national mobility, trade and tourism.

South Africa’s long-envisioned high-speed train network connecting Durban with major cities is edging closer to reality after Transport Minister Barbara Creecy issued a Request for Information to potential partners.

According to Berea Mail, the proposed rail system will link Durban with Johannesburg, Polokwane, Musina, Pretoria and Mbombela — marking a major stride towards improving national mobility, trade and tourism.

Durban ready to drive success

Confirming the development, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba hailed the announcement as a milestone for both the city and the country.

He said Durban is ready to play a pivotal role in ensuring the project’s success through co-operation between government and the private sector.

“I am pleased that all these engagements are yielding positive results. I must indicate that during these engagements I have been constantly emphasising to the minister and her team the importance of resuscitating the speed train project.

“As a city, we welcome this move as it will boost the economy of Durban, especially the tourism sector. Upon completion, thousands of people from Gauteng will be descending on Durban on a weekly basis for business and tourism,” said Xaba.

Boosting infrastructure and regional connectivity

The speed train initiative forms part of a broader national effort to revitalise South Africa’s rail infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity.

The project also aligns with eThekwini’s wider development strategy, which includes improving port operations and logistics efficiency.
