Hippo attacks man in Schoemanskloof

A man believed to be a farm worker was carried to the R539 in Mpumalanga by community members after a hippo left him seriously injured while reportedly fishing.

A 42-year-old man survived a hippo attack yesterday afternoon, after he reportedly went fishing at a river in the Schoemanskloof area.

Lowvelder reports that Martin Jeffrey from Emer-G-Med reported on the incident.

“At around 14:00, we received a call about a man lying under a tree at the Viva garage. On arrival, it was clear that he had lost a lot of blood, as he was very pale,” Jeffrey explained.

The man sustained severe injuries to the left side of his body and buttocks.

He was stabilised at the scene and rushed to Rob Ferreira Hospital.

“He is stable, but doctors are concerned about the severity of the wounds,” Jeffrey added.

How the incident unfolded

Witnesses at the scene alleged that the man is a farmworker and was fishing on a neighbouring farm when the incident occurred.

Community members reportedly found him and carried him to the Viva garage on the R539, around 45km west of Mbombela, for help.
