Hitchhiker shot in N3 roadside attack near Heidelberg off-ramp

A man was attacked after accepting a lift in a white Volkswagen Polo TSI, prompting a police investigation.

A hitchhiker from Vosloorus, a township south of Boksburg in the East Rand, was shot and robbed near the N3 highway just past the Berg en Dal bridge, close to the Heidelberg off-ramp, yesterday (June 10).

The Rensburg Forum, a volunteer-driven community safety and neighbourhood organisation, received a report of an injured man lying alongside the roadway, reports Heidelberg Nigel Heraut

Emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene.

On arrival, teams found a bloodied male victim, believed to be a hitchhiker, who had accepted a lift from occupants of a white Volkswagen Polo TSI.

Preliminary information suggests the victim was robbed during the trip, with the suspects also demanding access to his banking details and passwords.

A struggle is believed to have broken out inside the vehicle, during which the victim was shot.

The bullet entered through his arm and continued into his abdominal area.

ATS Tactical was the first responder on scene and quickly relayed information via emergency communication channels, prompting the rapid mobilisation of additional emergency services and role players.

Gauteng Medical Services provided emergency treatment on scene before transporting the injured man to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

SAPS has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and robbery.
