Hunt for Limpopo fugitive who shot himself during arrest

Police are looking for a man who escaped police custody while being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Thabo Ali Molobela (35), who escaped from police custody yesterday, is now the subject of an intense manhunt by Limpopo police.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has ordered that all appropriate resources be used to hunt down Molobela, who is said to have escaped from Sekororo Hospital where he was under police guard.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says Molobela shot himself while being arrested over a week ago. He was disarmed and rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

“The fugitive was apprehended at Santeng village in Hoedspruit, after allegedly shooting six family members at Makgophong village on August 19,” he adds.

The circumstances surrounding Molobela’s escape are under investigation.

Hadebe cautions anyone found to be assisting a fugitive, adding that it is a criminal offence and will be subject to the full might of the law.

Anyone with information that can assist with Molobela’s rearrest is urged to contact Warrant Officer Phaladi Makola on 082 749 2233, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, visit their nearest police station or use the MySaps App.
