IFP leader nabbed with alleged illegal firearm at party meeting

Pongola Municipality's council speaker is set to appear in the local magistrate's court today after his arrest on Monday.

An IFP senior member, who also serves as the Pongola Municipality’s council speaker, is expected to appear before the local magistrate’s court today.

According to the Zululand Observer, Kwenzakakufani Ecarbord Nxumalo (58) was arrested on Monday, allegedly for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Nxumalo was arrested at an IFP meeting where the party’s by-election performance was being analysed.

According to Zululand Cluster police spokesperson Captain Nkosie Gwala, Nxumalo is expected to make his first court appearance today.

The DA’s councillor Joseph Ngema said the arrest raises serious questions about the conduct of elected representatives and the possible abuse of public office.

“We welcome the swift action of law enforcement agencies. We express deep concern over the nature of the allegations. No public representative should be above the law, and any criminal behaviour must be dealt with decisively and without political interference,” said Ngema.

“We call on the SAPS to conduct a thorough investigation and allow the law to take its course. Accountability and transparency are critical in restoring trust in local government. As the DA, we will continue to monitor this case closely,” he added.
