Investigations continue into KZN drive-by shootings

A father from Newlands outside Durban was killed and his daughter injured in one of the recent incidents.

An elderly Newlands man died in a hail of bullets while walking with his daughter on John Dory Drive on Saturday night in a drive-by shooting incident.

Sixty-year-old Saggy Reddy and his 24-year-old daughter Bianca Reddy were walking when a black VW Polo stopped next to them. The passenger of the vehicle is alleged to have unleashed a barrage of bullets on the pair.

They were subsequently rushed to the hospital where Saggy succumbed to his injuries.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Newlands East police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The proliferation of drive-by shootings has raised concerns among many as the incidents seem to be scattered across Durban.

In a more recent incident that occurred on Tuesday night, Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to another scene of a shooting incident on Harry Gwala Road in the Cato Manor area.

“Upon arrival on the scene, a black Volkswagen Polo was found with multiple bullet holes. A male, believed to have been about 30 years old, was found to have sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead by paramedics,” said Emer-G-Med paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.

Four people, aged between 28 and 34, were also gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Wiggins last week, in what some believe was a taxi violence-related incident.
