Investigations underway after pupil ‘assaulted’ by teacher
The mother of a 10-year-old boy who nearly lost his eye when a teacher allegedly struck him with a pen in Tembisa has opened a case of assault.
Tembisa police cluster’s communications director Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha confirmed an assault case was opened against the teacher and said police investigations were still continuing,Tembisan reported.
Department of education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said the department would send officials from the Independent School Inspectorate to the school to find out what happened, and that they would see the report and make a decision from there.
The boy’s mother said she was hurt when the school did not even bother to contact her after the incident.
“My child was assaulted last Wednesday. I contacted the school on a Friday to find out what had happened. That was when they apologised,” said the mother.
The child was so traumatised by the incident he did not want to go to school again. He could not even look at the teacher, as he did not know what she would do to him next, added the mother.
Due to the seriousness of the assault, the child had to undergo an operation at a private hospital in Pretoria.
The mother has reportedly spent more than R10 000 through her medical aid following the incident. The overall cost is expected to be more than R35 000, as the child is set to go for another operation in June.
“The teacher was just given a warning, while my child is moving from hospital to hospital undergoing surgery. Is this justice?” she asked.
