Jacques Freitag murder: Man arrested near Mbombela

Former lawyer Rudie Lubbe was arrested between Mbombela and Sabie, while Chantelle Oosthuizen is still sought.

One of two wanted suspects in connection with the murder of former high jump champion Jacques Freitag was arrested earlier today. Specialist private investigator Mike Bolhuis confirmed the arrest of Rudie Lubbe.

“He did not hand himself over to the police but was arrested at about 10:00. Oosthuizen is still at large,” Bolhuis revealed. “Lubbe will be transported to the Hercules Police Station, where the murder case of Freitag is under investigation.”

The Citizen reports that Lubbe is a former lawyer and was arrested between Mbombela and Sabie.

Neither Bolhuis nor the police could yet confirm Chantelle Oosthuizen’s arrest. Warrants for her and Lubbe’s arrest were obtained by the Hercules police last week, shortly after the discovery of Freitag’s body on July 1.

Both are facing charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The discovery was made by the SAPS Search and Rescue Team, which comprised SAPS units such as the Air Wing, Water Wing, K9 Unit, and the local police.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the investigating officer, detective Captain Martin Smith, on 082 778 9385 or the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
