Joburg metro officer identified as victim in Orange Farm shooting

A 30-year-old JMPD officer who was shot and killed in his car after finishing work earlier this week has been identified as Lindani Moses Maleka.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is in mourning following the cold-blooded killing of one of its officers in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, on Monday.

Sedibeng Ster reports that the victim has been identified as Lindani Moses Maleka (30), who was ambushed while sitting in his car shortly after finishing his shift.

Officer Maleka had arrived at a house to visit a companion when unidentified attackers approached the pair.

The unknown shooters reportedly forced the woman out of the vehicle before opening fire on the officer.

Emergency medical services personnel arrived at the scene but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead in the driver’s seat.

The department states that despite the violent nature of the attack, the officer’s service firearm was not taken from the scene.

JMPD chief of police commissioner Patrick Jaca says the department is devastated by the senseless act of violence.

“We lose not just a colleague, but a protector of this city. Our deepest condolences go out to the Maleka family and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Shaan Motsapi told Sedibeng Ster that officers were summoned to the scene around 19:00.

“Upon arrival, the police found the victim’s lifeless body in the driver’s seat inside his vehicle.”

Motsapi confirms that a case of murder is being investigated.

The police urges anyone with information to come forward.
