Jogger raped, thrown into Crocodile River

She was raped and assaulted to the point of unconsciousness and robbed of her running watch.

MBOMBELA – A 33-year-old woman was raped and assaulted to the point of unconsciousness and robbed of her running watch before the suspect threw her body into the Crocodile River early Wednesday morning.

She regained consciousness soon after and was able to swim to the riverbank and summon help.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Brig Leonard Hlathi, the woman had been jogging on the road between Mataffin and Sabie/Lydenburg at about 05:45 when she was attacked.

She tried to fight off her assailant, but he managed to drag her into a nearby bush where he raped her before taking her watch. She lost consciousness and he threw her into the nearby river.

Fortunately, she regained consciousness soon after and managed to call for assistance. She was taken to hospital and later discharged. She sustained several bruises.

Police are investigating cases of rape and common robbery. The suspect is still at large and people with information are urged to contact Det Const Sphiwe Maseko on 079-256-4208.
