Judgment due for former KZN councillor accused of killing partner, kids in fire

Michael Buthelezi is accused of burning down his home, killing his family, with judgment and sentencing expected tomorrow.

KZN police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be in the Ladysmith Regional Court tomorrow for the judgment and sentencing of former DA councillor Michael Buthelezi.

Ladysmith Gazette reports that Buthelezi is alleged to have burnt down the house his family was sleeping in, killing his partner (41) and three children (aged two, six and 12).

He was also charged with defeating the ends of justice after opening a false case.

The incident happened in the Bethany area of Bergville in October 2023.

In the trial, Buthelezi claimed he was politically targeted and attacked, and that he survived the house fire.
