Kapp, Ismail hit Women’s Premier League jackpot
Proteas Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail were each bought for a hefty sum at the Women’s Premier League auction.
Proteas all-rounder Marizanne Kapp was bought for R3.26m by the Delhi Capitals at yesterday’s Women’s Premier League auction.
The UP (Uttar Pradesh) Warriorz paid R2.17m for Proteas pace bowler Shabnim Ismail.
Kapp’s wife, Dané van Niekerk – who was left out of the Proteas’ T20 World Cup squad after failing a 2km fitness test by 18 seconds – will play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and earn R649 000.
The Mumbai Indians paid the same amount for all-rounder Chloé Tryon.
Laura Wolvaardt, Suné Luus, Nadine de Klerk and Nonkululeko Mlaba all went unsold.
A total of 449 players were up for auction on Monday, with 87 securing spots in the teams. The five franchises could pick a maximum of 18 players each.
A total salary cap of $1.45m applies to each team in the tournament, which will be held in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from March 4-26.
