Kidnapped man freed after R150 000 ransom paid in KZN
Four suspects were arrested after a man was kidnapped and ransomed, with police recovering one of the stolen vehicles.
Four suspects aged between 25 and 35 are expected to appear in the Wartburg Magistrate’s Court today after their arrests in connection with cases of house robbery and kidnapping.
The Witness reports that, according to KZN police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, five intruders entered a home at KwaSwayimane and demanded money.
“The suspects subsequently took two vehicles which were parked in the yard and put the victim in the back of one of the vehicles and drove away with him.
“Along the way the suspects called the victim’s wife demanding that she deposits an amount of R150 000 to secure her husband’s release,” says Ngcobo.
After the money was deposited, the man was later dropped off at Elandskop, and the matter was reported to Wartburg Police Station for investigation.
“An operation by the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit as well as the Provincial Tracking Team on Monday led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of one of the vehicles taken during the house robbery.
“The vehicle was found at Mbali Unit J. Police also recovered a firearm and ammunition, two magazines, eight cellphones and a TV set,” adds Ngcobo.
