Kolbe on charge down: It sounded like a gunshot went off

Cheslin Kolbe looks back at his successful charge down in the quarter-final clash against France at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

During the latest episode of Chasing the Sun 2, Cheslin Kolbe explained he memorised every second of France full-back Thomas Ramos’ goal kicking routine before famously charging down his conversion in the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-final in Paris.

The third episode of the documentary of the Springboks’ 2023 Rugby World Cup win takes fans back to the epic quarter-final clash against the tournament hosts at a packed the Stade de France.

During the first half of the match, Kolbe broke away from a Bok huddle under the posts after France scored a try and timed his run to perfection to successfully charge down Ramos’ conversion, silencing a buzzing sold out stadium.

“I know his routine out of my head because I’ve analysed it so much,” Kolbe said during the documentary.

“From putting the ball down and taking five steps to the side and looking at the post once, from where he looked back at the posts and the ball.

“From there, it would take about a second and a half waiting for his one foot to step, which was [the signal] for me to take off.

“It sounded like a gunshot because everything went completely quiet.”
