“We are shocked by what has happened to one of our matric learners. We call upon the law enforcement agencies to make every possible effort to apprehend the suspects. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms. The learner had worked very hard during the last 12 years to finally obtain his National Senior Certificate, but all that has now been erased by his selfish killers who in our view are cowards. They have taken the young man’s life away and left his family and friends with many unanswered questions,” the MEC said.

The MEC shared his condolences with the bereaved family.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May God bless his soul in peace,” said Mshengu.

It is alleged that Zikhali was waiting at a garage on Alexandra Road along with friends and other community members during the early hours of Friday morning when he was approached by five suspects for his cellphone.

When he refused to hand over his phone, he was shot on his arm and head. He died on scene. The suspects fled in a getaway car.

A case of murder is being investigated.
