KZN boy dies days after being shot: 2 teens arrested
Swift action by Wentworth's Visible Police SAPS team resulted in the arrest of two teenagers.
Two teens have thus far been arrested in connection with the death of a 14-year-old boy from Wentworth, south of Durban, who was shot in Major Calvert Street on May 4.
Cameron Morrow was rushed to Wentworth Hospital after he was shot, but he died in hospital 11 days later.
According to Wentworth SAPS communication officer Captain Mbuso Gumede, members of the Wentworth SAPS Vispol team arrested one suspect immediately after he was identified by witnesses on the scene.
“Later, further information was given to the police about a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm who was an accomplice in the shooting. The teenager was arrested after the police found him in possession of an unlicensed .38 special revolver and ammunition,” says Gumede.
The 16-year-old was arrested for being in unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, while the 18-year-old was initially arrested in connection with attempted murder. The charge was then changed to murder after the victim succumbed to his injuries.
“Police confiscated the firearm and ammunition. The firearm will be sent to ballistics to establish if it was used in the commission of any other crime. More arrests are imminent,” adds Gumede.
The station commander of the Wentworth Police Station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, commends the police officers who made the arrest by acting swiftly after the complaint.
“We also thank the witnesses who assisted police with positive information that led to the arrest of the suspect. We urge the community to work with the police in the fight against crime. Residents must be the eyes and ears and report crime,” adds Mtshali.
Cameron was laid to rest on May 20.
