KZN court sentences bush knife-wielding boyfriend

A woman carrying her 22-month-old child on her back was struck several times all over her body – losing part of her right arm.

Anger, rage and violence has seen a 47-year-old man sentenced in the Izingolweni Regional Magistrate’s Court last week for attempted murder.

Magistrate Levi Yengopal sentenced Bongani Khusi to 15 years’ imprisonment for striking his girlfriend with a bush knife in Paddock, KZN, on July 9, 2022.

Khusi had gone to her home to visit her and found she was not there. He later found her walking with another man and attacked her, struck her all over her body, and chopped off part of her right arm.

It was heard in court that, at the time, the woman had been carrying her 22-month-old child on her back. She protected her baby by blocking the blows with her hand.

She is the mother of Khusi’s two children, aged five and three.

During the trial, the woman gave an emotional account of how Khusi struck her. After the incident, she was hospitalised for two weeks.

Khusi was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Public Prosecutor Ruben Judnarain told the court: “The accused (Khusi) showed no remorse, and under no circumstances should the court deviate from the 15-year sentence to a lesser one.”

He added that the accused crippled the mother of his children and that he must be removed from society as he is a danger.
