KZN farm attacker gets 22 years’ imprisonment
The Ladysmith Regional Court has convicted and sentenced a 19-year-old man to 22 years’ imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to commit rape and robbery with aggravated circumstances.
Nkosingiphile Emmanuel Nkosi was handed down the sentence yesterday after an incident that took place on February 14, 2014 at a farm in the Elandslaagte area, in KwaZulu-Natal.
Nkosi approached the farmhouse requesting to hire a truck. As the farmer was not available at the time his wife called him on his cellphone, said Major Thulani Zwane.
Zwane added Nkosi was requested to return the following day. Before leaving the farm, he requested a meal, and it was served to him through the burglar gate.
Knowing well that the farmer was not on the farm, he saw the opportunity to commit a heinous crime, said Zwane.
“Pretending to leave, he walked around the house, identified a back window and broke into the house, catching the elderly women by surprise,” added Zwane.
Nkosi raped the woman and robbed her of a cellphone, a bottle of pepper spray, and a small amount of cash, said Zwane.
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the police for the good work of investigating the case and finally securing the conviction.
In separate incident, a Mozambican farm attacker found guilty on 23 counts of armed robberycommitted eight years ago was sentenced to 104 years in prison by the Nelspruit Regional Court in October last year.
Magistrate Andre Geldenhuys said Lorenzo Bedome Gideon Mazunze, 33, robbed farms and terrorised its occupants around Malalane and Barberton in 2007. He said Mazunze was shot during his arrest on February 22, 2008 while trying to rob a family on a farm in Malalane.
Mazunze was found guilty of housebreakings and theft, housebreakings with intent to rob, trespassing, armed robberies, attempted murders, and malicious damage to property.
