KZN man gets 20 years jail term for hijackings
The Kokstad Regional Court has convicted and sentenced a man to 20 years’ imprisonment for hijackings and theft of motor vehicles.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the sentence handed down yesterday to the accused, Bonginkosi Vincent Ndlovu.
“This will send a strong message to other would-be hijackers [that] if they continue with their criminal activities, they will get a long term sentence,” said Ngobeni.
“In November 2012, Kokstad VIS members received information about a suspicious-looking Toyota Avanza vehicle in the area. The members started their investigation and saw this suspicious vehicle, and they searched it,” added Ngobeni.
Subsequently, police positively identified the hijacked vehicle at Bhekithemba area in the same year.
On further investigation, more hijacked vehicles were recovered at Cedarville and Kokstad area, police added.
All recovered vehicles were reported as hijacked in Durban, Townhill and Umlazi areas.
The accused was linked to all these recovered vehicles and charged accordingly.
In a separate incident, four people were arrested for allegedly hijacking a cigarette-carrying truck in September.
It was alleged the suspects pointed a firearm at the driver and drove off with the truck load of cigarettes.
Following a tip-off, police went to Dawn Park, where the four people were found to be loading off stolen goods on to another allegedly hijacked vehicle.
