KZN police Constable shot dead by colleagues

Police Constable Nzelo Mbatha has been shot and killed, allegedly by his colleagues, after he threatened to kill them on Friday morning in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police said Mbatha went to his girlfriend’s house at 2am armed with his service pistol, Zululand Observer reported.

Mbatha then allegedly shot a three-year-old boy in the head, and wounded two girls aged 13 and 14 years, before fleeing the scene.

It was also not yet clear if his girlfriend was at home at the time of the shooting.

Mbatha later returned to the scene and reportedly threatened officers who were there investigating the shooting.

The officers then opened fire on Mbatha, fatally wounding him in the head and leg.

The motive for shooting the children remains unknown.

On Tuesday night, Garsfontein police Constable Ali Nkuna reportedly shot and killed a woman believed to be his former girlfriend and her current lover, before turning the gun on himself.

Nkuna reportedly approached the woman and her current boyfriend at her house in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

During the shooting, the separated couple’s two-year-old son was struck in the right cheek by a bullet.
