KZN police officer shot dead in his home

No arrests have been made after a police officer was shot dead at his home in Mfume, Umlazi, in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged Captain Sithole’s wife told police she had been busy in the kitchen last Saturday at about 8pm when she heard a knock on the door. When she opened up, three men entered, asked for her husband, drew firearms and told her to be quiet, South Coast Sun reported.

Amazimtoti police communications officer Captain Charlene van der Spuy said two of the men went to her husband, who was in a rondavel. She heard a gunshot and him screaming. He sustained a fatal wound to the chest. The men fled in a blue vehicle after stealing a flat screen TV, laptop, cellphone and keys to the car.

A case of murder is under investigation.

In a separate incident, a police officer was shot and killed at Johannesburg Park Station in March. According to police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu, police responded to a robbery at a bakery inside the station at about 5am.

“About 10 suspects fled when the officers arrived, and a chase ensued to the nearby Wanderers rank,” Mngomezulu told The Citizen.

He added some of the suspects fled on foot, while others got into a car. At Wanderers, the suspects opened fire on the police, killing the officer. The suspects also managed to steal the deceased officer’s state-issued firearm before fleeing the scene.
