Prisoners excel in NSC exam with 94.4% pass rate

KZN has been commended for producing the highest number of matriculants in the NSC examinations.

KZN prisons have received praise for producing the highest number of matriculants in the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, reports the Zululand Observer.

According to the Department of Correctional Services, 50 inmates passed matric, with 45 attaining Bachelor’s passes.

Overall, a pass rate of 94.4% was achieved by inmates across the country.

This as 180 students from 18 schools sat for the NSC examinations.

“There are 19 registered correctional services schools offering further education and training from Grade 10 to Grade 12,” said Correctional Services Minister Dr Pieter Groenewald.

Two schools, Usethubeni in Durban-Westville in KZN and Baviaanspoort in Gauteng, have maintained a 100% pass rate for the past 10 years.

“Usethubeni alone accounted for 31 learners, all of whom achieved Bachelor passes. These results demonstrate that our focus is not merely on achieving a pass, but on producing quality outcomes,” said Groenewald.

He also commended the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre School, which achieved a 100% pass rate.
