KZN rape suspect to appear in court
A 32-year-old man believed to be involved in numerous house break-ins and rape cases around Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal will appear in the Verulam Magistrates’ court today.
The unidentified suspect was arrested on Sunday. He was found in possession of some of the items taken during the house robberies, Phoenix Sun reported.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said on April 2014 to March 2015, fifteen cases of a similar nature were reported by the victims, who all gave a similar description of the assailant.
“An identity kit was compiled and distributed to the communities in and around the Tongaat area,” added Zwane.
It is believed the suspect would allegedly attack homes with no men present. He would rob and rape the women found in the homes.
“The suspect will face multiple counts of house robberies and rape,” said Major Zwane.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the members for the arrest of the suspected rapist.
“We will ensure that any form of violence directed to women and children is dealt with intensely. Detectives will work around the clock to establish if the suspect is not wanted for any other crimes in the province. We appeal to other victims who did not open cases and who may be attacked by the same suspect to come forward and report it to the police,” added Ngobeni.
In a separate incident, a 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with rape and robbery in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal in February.
The suspect allegedly asked the victim to meet him at Theku Plaza, and while at the back of the garage, he dragged her to the veld at Albert Wessels, where he tied her up, raped and robbed her of her shoes, cellphone and cash.
