KZN: Robbers dressed in police uniform flee with R500 000

AN amount of R500 000 and R50 000 worth of cigarettes were stolen from a Pinetown store yesterday (March 3).
According to Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, four men, dressed in SAPS uniform and armed with firearms, requested to speak to the manager at the food store in Josiah Gumede Road.
“As they entered the store via the receiving and despatch area, they saw the manager walking past,” said Manqele.
It is alleged that they grabbed the manager and took out their firearms.
According to Manqele, the robbers also disarmed the security guard and confiscated all the cellphones of the employees who were standing nearby.
“The suspects threatened them and instructed the manager to open the safe which he did. The men stole a sum of R 500 000 from the safe and also took cigarettes to the value of R50 000 before fleeing the scene. The security guard’s firearm and the employees’ cell phones were left in a bin outside the store by the suspects,” said Manqele.
The robbers fled in a white Golf GTI which was parked in front of the store. No shots were fired and no serious injuries were sustained.
A case of business robbery is being investigated by Pinetown police.
