KZN snake catcher travels miles to save black mambas

When a black mamba is in need of a rescue, Sarel van der Merwe does not mind to add a few kilometres to his vehicles odometer.

The South Coast’s legendary snake catcher, Sarel van der Merwe, has been on a mission once again.

He travelled 128km (64km there and 64km back) this week to a house situated deep inland of Hibberdene to rescue a black mamba.

The retrieved black mamba from the TLB in Oribi Gorge.

After moving a lot of items, he spotted him behind a generator.

Van der Merwe has had a very busy summer season, most recently he rushed to a farm in Oribi Gorge to save a black mamba that went into the farm’s TLB.

It curled itself up by the hydraulic pipes.

“I removed the top cover to catch him from the top and he quickly moved to the front of the engine. I then jumped down and ran to the front side of the TLB and removed him safely,” he explains.
