KZN teen resuscitated after near-drowning in estate pool

A doctor and medics administered CPR for 15 minutes but the teen remained unresponsive and advanced life support intervention was needed.

A 14-year-old boy was resuscitated after a near-drowning incident at a community pool at the Palm Lakes Family Estate clubhouse in Ballito, KZN, yesterday afternoon.

Circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear, but it is understood that he dived into the pool, knocking his head and falling unconscious.

“It is unknown how long he was underwater for, but luckily he was pulled out by onlookers, including a doctor and medic who administered CPR,” said Medi Response KZN spokesperson Paul Herbst.

It is understood the boy’s pulse had already stopped and he was not breathing by the time he was removed from the pool.

“Upon arrival of paramedics – around 15 minutes after CPR began – the teenager was still unresponsive. Advanced life support intervention and full resuscitation was administered after which he regained his circulation and pulse,” said Herbst.

Once stabilised, the boy was taken to hospital but remained in a critical condition.
