‘Land of blood’: 4 killed in separate Calcutta shootings
Authorities are probing a cluster of unrelated killings that unfolded between Wednesday and yesterday in one of Mpumalanga’s most volatile areas.
Four people were gunned down in the controversial Calcutta policing area of Mpumalanga since Wednesday.
According to Lowvelder, the latest killing happened at Oakley Trust Makgona around midday yesterday.
In this incident, a man, aged 31, was shot dead by unknown gunmen.
“We have opened a case of murder and are investigating circumstances that led to the killing,” says Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo.
Multiple shootings under investigation
Meanwhile, Calcutta police are also investigating another gun-related murder of a 37-year-old woman. She was in the company of her 16-year-old son and her male friend, aged 39, when they were attacked in Mkhuhlu in the early hours of Friday.
The shooting happened between Sinyameni 2 and Hoxani College in Mkhuhlu. The two male victims were injured, and the man managed to drive to Matikwane Hospital despite his injuries.
“We have opened a case of murder and two of attempted murder following the attack,” adds Masondo.
Wednesday killings
On Wednesday evening, a 60-year-old man was shot dead while driving to Marite.
“We received a complaint about a shooting incident. On arrival, we found the victim lying next to an Isuzu bakkie with gunshot wounds in the upper body. He was certified dead on the scene,” says Masondo.
Another victim, also on Wednesday, was a Pakistani national who was shot dead in Mkhuhlu near the Traffic College. The 33-year-old victim, the owner of a local spaza shop, was sitting with two other men when they were accosted by a suspect armed with a firearm.
“The suspect fired several shots towards the victim before disappearing. The victim was certified dead on the scene,” adds Masondo.
No arrests yet
No arrests have been made in any of these killings.
Calcutta Police Station is located in Mkhuhlu township, which has since been nicknamed the ‘land of blood’ following more than 60 gun-related deaths over the past three years.
