Lenacapavir roll-out set to boost HIV prevention efforts in SA

A new long-acting HIV prevention injection has arrived, offering additional protection options for vulnerable groups and those struggling with adherence.

South Africa’s HIV prevention efforts are set to receive a significant boost following the arrival of a new long-acting prevention medicine, Lenacapavir, in the country.

Bloemfontein Courant reports that, according to the Department of Health, the first batch of the HIV prevention medicine has already landed in South Africa.

First batch arrives

“The Department of Health welcomes the arrival of the first batch HIV prevention medicine, Lenacapavir in South Africa, which consists of 37 920 doses,” the department said, adding that the roll-out forms part of integrated, people-centred HIV prevention services aimed at offering new hope to those facing barriers to existing prevention methods.

Roll-out plans pending

The launch of the phased implementation plan of the six-monthly injectable is yet to be announced. Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, in consultation with the president, will announce the date for the launch to be led by the president.

Prevention breakthrough

“Lenacapavir is a preventive medicine, not a vaccine, considered one of the most exciting HIV prevention advances in years…is expected to expand HIV prevention choices, improve adherence especially among the most vulnerable priority groups including adolescent girls and young women, sex workers, men having sex with men, among others.”
