Light magnitude earthquake hits Tzaneen and surrounding areas

Residents from Tzaneen and Nkowankowa got the surprise of their lives when they were woken up by an unexplainable sound and shaking.

An estimated 3.0 magnitude earthquake was felt in Tzaneen and surrounding areas this morning.

According to Volcano Discovery the quake happened at 07:53 and was felt up to 25km northeast of Nkowankowa in Limpopo.

“The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter,” a post on their website states.

Residents of Nkowankowa, Dan village, Tzaneen and Letaba Hospital are among the people who took to social media stating that they felt the tremor.

Earthquakes are not so unusual in the region. In June 2016, Tzaneen experienced a tremor measured at 1.7 on the Richter scale and in July 2021 another quake was felt in Nkowankowa.
