Lightning kills Kempton Park man
A 26-year-old man died after being struck by lightning while walking home along Zuurfontein Road near Kempton Park, on the East Rand.
The deceased, Jack Lindani, was on his way to his Mayibuye area home from Kempton Park Home Affairs when he was struck by lightning at about 2pm yesterday, Kempton Expressreported.
Sebenza police spokesperson Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso said: “A woman who was walking behind Lindani, witnessed the incident. She rushed over to him and saw the injury on his head where the bolt struck him. He also had burn wounds on his chest, stomach and left leg and was already dead.”
Tsotsotso added Lindani was struck out of his shoes and his socks, shirt and pants were torn.
“We found his ID and cellphone on him and that was how we reached his family,” said Tsotsotso.
She added this was the third person who has been struck by lightning on this road in the past two years.
In a separate incident, seven people were killed and four seriously injured when they were struck by lightning in Mthonjaneni, KwaZulu-Natal, in February.
Spokesman Lennox Mabaso said: “The deceased were participating in a traditional ceremony hosted by [one of their neighbours],” said Mabaso.
“Preliminary reports indicate that they were inside one of the houses when a bolt of lightning struck.”
Paramedics from the province’s Emergency Medical Services responded and the four injured people were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
