A man (77), who was arrested after the incident, alleged he shot at hippopotamus.

A 38-year-old woman sustained gunshot wounds while fishing along Mogol River on Tuesday.

According to a statement by police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi, the incident occurred at around 14:00.

“The woman sustained a gunshot wound while her partner managed to hide and alert the police and emergency services. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and police investigations commenced,” Seabi explained.

He added that a 77-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder.

“He alleged that he was shooting at hippopotamus in the river. Police seized two rifles, a revolver, a pistol and two airguns during the arrest,” Seabi explained.

He is expected to appear before the magistrate’s court in Lephalale today (April 28).

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe urged residents to be responsible while handling their firearms. She also requested those involved in the incident to “stay calm and afford the police the space to do their investigations”.
