Limpopo welcomes 215 new year babies

Health experts in public hospitals across the province were hard at work in maternity wards as they delivered 215 babies on New Year’s Day.

LIMPOPO – The province has welcomed at least 215 babies on New Year’s Day.

This is according to information provided by the Department of Health which highlighted that 107 boys and 108 girls were successfully delivered in public hospitals across the province.

24 teenage mothers were attended to.

It was further reported that the first baby, a baby girl weighing 3 380g, was delivered at Donald Frazer Hospital in Vhembe at 00:05. This was followed by Sekhukhune district where a 19-year-old girl gave birth at 00:28 in Jane Furse Hospital. Mopani’s Nkhensani Hospital delivered their first baby at 00:27 while the first babe to be delivered in the Waterberg was at Warmbath Hospital at 01:58.

Sekhukhune district also saw the only set of twins. The infants weighing 2.0kg were born at Macklenberg Hospital at 03:25.

Here is a breakdown per district:

Vhembe district: 55 babies; 27 boys and 28 girls. Six teenage mothers.

Sekhukhune district: 45 babies; 17 boys and 28 girls. Six teenage mothers.

Mopani district: 56 babies; 29 boys and 27 girls. Five teenage mothers.

Wateberg district: 32 babies; 18 boys and 14 girls. Three teenage mothers.

Capricorn district: 27 babies; 16 boys and 11 girls. Four teenage mothers.
