[LISTEN] Limpopo learner stabbed to death on his way home

A fight reportedly broke out between learners, one was stabbed and others sustained serious injuries.

A Gr 11 Magoletša High School learner has been stabbed to death after a fight broke out between learners at Medingen village, Kgapane.

The death of the learner, whose name is unknown at this stage, has been confirmed in a joint statement released by the departments of social development and education.

Departmental spokespersons Tidimalo Chuene and Witness Tiva said in the statement that the departments have dispatched a team of social workers to provide psychosocial support to the family of the deceased learner.

“The social workers will also extend the same service to the school for learners in order for them to cope well, as they are currently sitting for their end of the year exams,” the statement reads.

Social Development MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale condemned the incident and said it indicates that social ills such as substance abuse and bullying are still prevalent in parts of the province.

“The incident once again exposes the unacceptable behaviour by some of our young people in various communities. This violent behaviour by children must immediately come to an end. We urge parents to keep a close eye on their children so that they can notice behavioural changes and report them to social workers for immediate intervention,” Rakgoale added.

Tiva confirmed to Review that learners, who were injured during the incident, were taken to a nearby hospital.

Education MEC Polly Boshielo also condemned the incident and made a plea to parents and other key stakeholders to be actively involved in supporting schools to deal with the scourge of bullying and abuse.

“It is so devastating and saddening that we had to lose a young life in this manner. This is something that needs all of us to collaborate on, to enforce laws that prohibit learners to carry dangerous weapons in schools and in communities. We send our condolences to the bereaved family and the entire school community,” she said.

Chuene said the incident is “disturbing” and happened when the learners were on their way home.
