Listen: Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams resigns

He says he resigns 'in the best interests of the Tshwane metro' and that he does not want political instability in the metro.

Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams announced his resignation today.

“One of my core goals as mayor has always been to ensure the stability of the multi-party coalition in Tshwane without which service delivery suffers,” Williams says.

“I do not want the political instability that has taken place in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni to spill over into Tshwane.”

Williams adds he tendered his resignation in the best interests of the Tshwane metro.

While the resignation had initially been effective at midnight (February 13), Williams later announced that he had amended the date to February 28 after ‘consultations with various political parties’.

“Being executive mayor of the capital city has not been without its difficulties, but I have embraced every challenge that has come my way in the execution of my duties, all of which have allowed my own personal development.

“I resign not in frustration, resentment or anger but in peace knowing that I have been given an incredible opportunity and I have fulfilled my duties to the best of my abilities.”

Williams says he believed that the DA and coalition members had done a stellar job for the residents as no vanity projects were conducted that did not bring direct benefit to residents.

“Top of our priorities have always been our electricity, water and road infrastructure which after years of neglect required urgent attention.

“I implore the next leadership of the city to stay true to these priorities as we look towards the future.

“As I leave office I want to thank my fellow members of the mayoral committee for their dedication, hard work and efforts over these past months.”

Williams thanked the residents of Tshwane for their support.

“It has been my honour to have served as your executive mayor,” concludes Williams who followed Stevens Makgalapa, Abel Tau, Solly Msimanga and the temporary ANC administrators.

Williams has been mayor since October 2020 and the next mayor will be the sixth mayor since 2016.
