Load shedding to continue until the weekend

Load shedding was unexpectedly implemented on Monday afternoon after several failures at generating units.

Eskom has confirmed that load shedding will continue until Saturday morning at 05:00.

This comes as the power utility unexpectedly implemented stage 2 load shedding on Monday afternoon.

Eskom earlier said that units at the Matla, Kendal, Matimba, Kusile and Grootvlei power stations tripped on Monday morning, while units at Arnot and Hendrina power stations were forced to shut down.

“This, in addition to other units that had tripped during the weekend, reduced available generation capacity, forcing Eskom to rely heavily on emergency generation reserves to keep the lights on.”

Eskom said in a media statement on Tuesday that due to the unreliability of the generators, and to prevent implementing higher stages of load shedding, stage 2 would continue until Saturday.

“Since yesterday evening Eskom teams have returned four generation units to service. Two other units were, however, taken offline for repairs.”
