Lower stages of load-shedding planned this weekend

A delay in repairing generating units at two power stations is causing strain on the power system.

Thanks to a lower electricity demand, stages 1 and 3 load-shedding will be implemented over the weekend.

Here is the planned schedule:

Stage 3: 16:00 today until 05:00 tomorrow.
Stage 1: 05:00 tomorrow until 16:00 tomorrow.

According to Eskom this pattern will continue until further notice. The power utility said it would update the public if any significant changes occur.

Eskom said breakdowns are currently at 15 901MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 4 014MW.

“Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit at Camden Power Station was returned to service. In the same period, a generating unit at Matla and two generating units at Camden and Kriel power stations were taken offline for repairs,” read a media statement issued by Eskom.

The power utility said the delay in returning generating units to service at Kendal and Tutuka power stations is contributing to current electricity capacity constraints.

“Eskom teams are working tirelessly to return these generating units to service.”
