Magical Chelsin Kolbe and rampant pack sees Springboks bully Italy

South Africa’s playoff hopes are very much alive as Rassie Erasmus’ troops keep their composure well.

The Springboks overcame the frustrating implementation of uncontested scrums early and some downright cynical acts from Italy to record a vital 49-3 victory over Italy in Shizuoka on Friday.

The bonus-point win keeps Rassie Erasmus’ troops’ playoff hopes very much healthy.

Despite having their obvious dominance at the scrum blunted by injuries to both the Azzuri’s tightheads, the South African forwards were rampant, dominating the collisions and defending with fire.

The Boks’ cause was also undeniably helped by prop Andrea Movotti’s red card in the second half for a shocking tackle on Duane Vermeulen.

While their attacking play still needs some tweaking, particularly in the accuracy department, South Africa will be happy with their try haul.

The standout was Cheslin Kolbe, who was once again magical on the right-wing and ended with a brace of tries.

He did finish the match with a grimace and a sore ankle, which will be a concern.

Point scorers:

Springboks – Tries; Cheslin Kolbe (2), Bongi Mbonambi, Lukhanyo Am, Makazole Mapimpi, RG Snyman, Malcolm Marx. Conversions: Handre Pollard (4). Penalties: Pollard (2).

Italy – Penalty: Tommaso Allan.
