Man dies on Mango flight
A man died shortly after boarding a Mango flight at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday morning.
Speaking to The Citizen, Mango spokesperson Hein Kaiser said the man collapsed inside the plane after boarding a 6:30 flight departing for Durban.
“Emergency services were called to the scene and tried to resuscitate him, but unfortunately they could not bring him back,” Kaiser said.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene. Several of the airline’s flights were reportedly delayed as a result of the incident.
Kaiser could not confirm whether the man had suffered a heart attack, and added that it was not clear what the cause of death was.
Similar incidents had happened to the low-cost airline in the past and, according to Kaiser, such occurrences were common in air travel.
“From time to time, all airlines across the world experience an incident like this ,” Kaiser added.
In August, an elderly woman collapsed on a plane at Gatwick Airport in London and later died after travelling from Sierra Leone, UK’s Mirror reported.
While on the flight the woman had reportedly been sweating and vomiting.
The woman’s death sparked fears of an Ebola outbreak and the plane was later quarantined by airport officials.
