Man drowns in front of family in Hartbeespoort Dam
His wife and children were watching from the shore while he was fishing in a canoe about 100m away from them.
A search is currently underway for a man who drowned in front of his family in the Hartbeespoort Dam on Thursday night.
According to Arthur Crewe of the Hartbeespoort NSRI, the man was fishing on a canoe about 100m from the shore at Eagle Waters in Broederstroom. His wife, three children and mother were watching from the shore.
“It seems the canoe got caught up in the illegal fishing nets, filled up with water and went under,” Crewe says.
The man disappeared with the canoe.
The NSRI was alerted and was on the scene soon after the incident occurred at around 20:00.
“We started with the search immediately until 02:30, and then resumed again at 07:00,” says Crewe.
Police divers have joined the NSRI in the search.
The family was camping at Eagle Waters and the missing man would have celebrated his birthday today.
The NSRI and police divers are currently on the dam looking for the missing man.
