Man in court after drug bust on N1
A passenger who allegedly tried to flee a bus at a police vehicle checkpoint near Prince Albert is in custody following a dagga seizure valued at an estimated R165 000.
A 29-year-old man appeared in the Prince Albert Magistrate’s Court today after being arrested in connection with a drug seizure valued at an estimated R165 000, reports Oudtshoorn Courant.
Southern Cape Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies said the arrest forms part of ongoing crime-combatting operations conducted by members of the Central Karoo Flying Squad.
Spies said officers set up a vehicle checkpoint on the N1 at the entrance to Prince Albert on Monday where a passenger bus was stopped and searched.
“During the inspection, members noticed a passenger jumping over a farm fence and attempting to flee on foot. Police immediately gave chase and, with assistance from the farm owner, apprehended the suspect. He was later linked to a travelling bag found on the bus containing two bales of dagga,” he explained.
The drugs were confiscated, and the suspect was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs.
He remains in custody while the matter proceeds through the court process.
