Man killed by collapsing sandbank in Amanzimtoti

Once freed, a man who sustained serious injuries went into cardiac arrest.

A man was killed when a sandbank collapsed on him in Mount Road in Amanzimtoti earlier today.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the incident occurred just after 12:00.

On arrival, paramedics found that a sandbank had collapsed onto two men while they were working at a construction site. Both men were trapped and one had critical injuries.

“Paramedics and firefighters worked to free the men using spades and other tools.

“Once freed, one of the men went into cardiac arrest, and paramedics from Netcare911 and ALS Paramedics attempted to resuscitate him. After a lengthy process, he was declared deceased on scene.”

Jamieson says the deceased is believed to be about 30 years old.

The second man sustained minor injuries and refused further treatment.

“At this stage, the events leading up to the incident are unknown, however, SAPS was on scene and will be investigating further,” says Jamieson.
