Man killed in Western Cape robbery, 3 gunmen flee

A man who was shot in the stomach during a business robbery was declared dead at George Hospital.

Thembalethu, George, police have launched a manhunt for three masked gunmen after a man was shot and killed during a robbery on Monday night.

George Herald reports that the incident took place at about 20:00 when three armed men entered a shop in Zone 9 in Thembalethu, demanding cash and cellphones.

It is understood that the victim was ordered to come out from behind the counter and made to lie down on the floor, while one of the gunmen ransacked the counter.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says at some point, a gunshot went off and the victim was shot in the stomach. The trio then hightailed it out of the shop with a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The victim was taken to George Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

A case of murder and business robbery was opened.

No suspects have been arrested.
