Man robbed at gunpoint inside bank in Pretoria

The man was in the Standard Bank branch in Pretoria North to make a cash deposit of R90 000.

A Pretoria North man was traumatised after he was robbed at gunpoint on Monday morning – inside the local Standard Bank branch.

“How can people get into a bank with a firearm in their possession?” the man, who spoke to Pretoria Rekord on condition of anonymity, demanded to know.

“Banks are supposed to be safe.

“Why were there no metal detectors, or other measures, in place to prevent this?”

The man was at the bank to deposit R90 000 in cash at around 09:45.

“The suspect went into the bank and targeted a specific person who was holding a bag,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen.

Miyen said there was a struggle between the bank robber and the victim for the bag until he [the bank robber] pulled out his firearm.

“After getting the bag, he ran out of the bank and got into a getaway vehicle,” she said.

While shots were fired outside the bank, no injuries were recorded during the robbery.

An armed robbery docket was being investigated.

Standard Bank spokesperson Ross Linstrom has yet to respond to Rekord’s inquiry at the time of going to print.
