Notorious suspect killed in Durban shoot-out with police

A man killed during a shoot-out with police was wanted for numerous crimes, including murder, attempted murder and a cash-in-transit robbery.

A wanted man, suspected of being involved in an Umbumbulu, KZN, shooting that left four people dead two years ago, was killed during a shoot-out with police in Durban on Monday.

South Coast Sun reports that the man, whose name has not been made public, was sought for a series of crimes, including murder and attempted murder committed at Sawoti this month, as well as for alleged involvement in a cash-in-transit robbery in Umlazi on December 5.

Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, says the shoot-out took place at Maydon Wharf.

“Police received intelligence indicating that the armed suspect was heading towards the Durban CBD. Police officers spotted the minibus taxi in which the suspect was travelling. Before they could intercept it, the minibus taxi drove straight towards the police officers while firing shots at them. Police returned fire, and the suspect was fatally wounded,” says Magwaza.

Two pistols were recovered on the scene, with one firearm found on the deceased suspect’s person, while the other one was recovered inside the minibus taxi.

A case of attempted murder against the police was registered at the Maydon Wharf Police Station.
