Manhunt launched for Rhodes Park murder-rape gang

Gauteng police yesterday launched a manhunt for a gang of 12 suspects who allegedly raped a woman and drowned two men at Rhodes Park in Kensington, east of Johannesburg, on Saturday evening.

Cleveland police spokesperson Constable Mpho Mashakane said two men and their girlfriends were walking in the park at 6.30pm when the gang attacked them. The two men were tied up and thrown into the lake. They drowned.

One man in the gang had a gun and another a knife. “One of the suspects raped one female victim. The bodies of the two male victims, aged 25 and 32, were later found by police divers,” said Mashakane.

One of the men who drowned is believed to be a teacher at a Johannesburg high school. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said one of the suspects has been arrested. The motive for the crime was not yet known.

Tony de Munnik, chairperson of the residents’ organisation, I Love Kensington Association, described it as a “black day in our village”. He added the association planned to table a proposal for a more effective public space initiative before the city’s executive mayor Parks Tau.

“It’s time to act now and let us do so in the name of the victims of Saturday’s attack.”
